noun
cop
Police officer. Originates from the eight-pointed copper stars worn by the first municipal police officers, in New York, New York, near the turn of the 20th century. The officers reportedly kept the stars highly-polished, and in turn came to be called "coppers", later shortened to "cops". There are also reports that "c.o.p." is an acronym for "constable on patrol". But guess who he saw when he hit the block? It was the same cop car, the same two cops -- Boogie Down Productions (Illegal Business) [1]
