Verdun is a borough located in the southwest corner of central Montreal, Canada. Founded in 1671, Verdun is one of Quebec’s oldest municipalities. This area is made up of mostly duplexes and low rise apartments with a high number of immigrant families residing in them. Once a thriving community, over the years this area has deteriorated as jobs became scarce and unemployment became a reality for many residents. Key issues identified by the local community are the high dropout rate and the need for school supplies. The vast majority of families are Francophone, with smaller English speaking and Vietnamese communities.The area has seen an increase in homelessness and an increase in drug use amongst its poor.

East Verdun is one of the most impoverished areas in Montreal, with high proportions of sole support parents, families living on social assistance and unemployment. Over 45% of Verdun households (not including the high-income Nun’s Island) have annual incomes of less than $30,000. This section is two-thirds Francophone and 15% recent immigrant. Immigrants are mainly Asian, the largest group being Chinese.
