Cops Probe Bizarre Shooting-Suicide in Brampton

It was a day of terror for unsuspecting shoppers and workers at a busy office plaza on Orenda Rd. in Brampton.

Just before 2pm Monday, a man walked into a second floor business and approached another male. No one's sure what was said but a fight broke out.

And as stunned co-workers watched in shock, the intruder pulled out a gun, aimed it straight at his opponent and pulled the trigger.

"It was chaos," a shaken business owner Conrad Gunn recalls. "It was unbelievable."

According to police, the suspect tried to make his escape through the nearby Dixie Grocery. He rushed into the store, confronting several frightened but unhurt patrons inside.

But he didn't linger long. With authorities in hot pursuit, the man fled out the back of the business, straight for another office building packed with employees.

With all area merchants ordered into lockdown, authorities spread out looking for the dangerous gunman. But by the time they found him, it was too late.

The weapon wielding assailant had turned his pistol on himself, as the final sounds of the reverberating fire power echoed through the complex.

Cops regret the fact they couldn't get there sooner.

"It took a long time for our tactical and rescue unit to clear the area to insure that public safety was paramount," relates P.C. Pete Brantwood. "Whether this individual intended to have any other targets or victims, we're unsure at this moment."

Investigators don't know the motive behind the shooting, relationship between the men or if others were supposed to be in his line of fire.

Because a death was involved during an incident with police, the province's Special Investigations Unit has now been called in to examine what happened.

No names have been released but the victim is being treated for his wounds and is expected to be released from hospital.
