Kitchener aka K- Town, K-Dubb

Kitchener (a.k.a. K-Town/K-dubb) is a city located in Southwestern Ontario and has a population of 250,348. The metropolitan area, including neighbouring cities Cambridge and Waterloo, has 451,235 people, making it the 11th largest CMA in Canada and the fifth largest CMA in Ontario. Generally, when speaking of Kitchener, the majority of people are refering to all 3 cities in the region. There has been a large increase in violence in Kitchener due to gangs. The city now boasts about a thriving music scene of hip hop, metal, and hardcore punk scenes.

The Hype

Kitchener isn't exactly drive-by capital of Canada. It's not even murder capital of Canada or even Southwestern Ontario but Kitchener isn't blind to gang violence, drugs and weapons. Historically, in the 1980's and 1990's Kitchener (and the entire region) was very well known for its biker gang presence. The Hells Angels and Satans Choice were very well known in the area, and constantly made headlines regarding the sale and movement of drugs, violence, murders, and police related issues. Recently the biker gangs have moved out of the city and into more rural, surrounding areas. However, they still control the majority of the marijuana, meth, and crack-cocaine production and mass distribution in the city. These days, Kitchener is known for it's crack-houses, low income housing, delapitated downtown core (though it is seeing modernization), and dis-affected youths running to gangs for protection (LMFAO...protection from what?? Curfue?).

Most of Kitchener only has small-time gangs, but that doesn't mean it hasn't produced a large gang before. The Slingers, was the first big gang to have made Kitchener headlines and news. It's violent members have made their impact but not just in Kitchener, in Toronto as well after an altercation at a Hip Hop concert, a suspected Slinger member from Kitchener took a piece of concrete slab and crushed a man's head. Back in 2001, 20 Slinger members attacked and killed Joel Monroe on Canada's Day weekend. The impact was so loud, it had been heard from TV stations down in Toronto and Windsor. Although there are only around 6 murders a year in Kitchener, it's still has it's violent act's of crime. Despite not having many large gangs of its own anymore, the majority of the gangs in existence now are connected to bigger gangs, such as the Crips, Bloods, and Latin Kings (They ain't connected to NOTHING except the name sake, titles and the image).

In the 1990s, the region was also known for it's skinhead and neo-nazi presence (THAT'S the REAL Kitchener, not a bunch of wonna be white boys calling themselves crips & bloods). Such people exist today, but they rarely make headlines. A few recent incidents that have made the news include the beating of a physically handicapped African man in Victoria Park, severely injuring him. There have been headlines of neo-nazi youth committing "drive-by" racist attacks which primarily consisted of shouting racial slurs, throwing ballons of urine and eggs. The last visible rememberence of the skinhead groups in the region was in the early 2000's, when a group living at the corner of Weber and Cedar Street North flew a swastika flag on the outside porch of their upper floor of their house.
