hype

  1. Statements made about something before that thing comes out, especially wild statements guessing about the things nature (whether positive or negative). For example, record companies will often put many advertisements out before a record comes out. Before Public Enemy's album came out there was much negative hype in the media. "Yo Harry! You're a writer; are we that type? Don't believe the hype..." -- Public Enemy (Don't believe the hype [1988]).
  2. Cool. "Too damn hype" -- Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (??? [1988]).
  3. Crackhead.
